SUMMARY:Earthquake Risk and Preparedness
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn more about earthquake risk in the Bay Area and ways to prepare. Speaker Steve Walter\, retired Seismologist\, Earthquake Science Center at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) will also explain the science behind the USGS findings for regular quakes on the southern Hayward fault. Steve will explain the science behind the USGS findings for regular quakes on the southern Hayward fault. The last six quakes (in 1134\, 1317\, 1475\, 1629\, 1725\, and 1868) occurred at intervals of 95 to 183 years. The 1868 quake had an estimated magnitude of between 6.8-7.0.  Learn why seismologists think the next BIG Bay Area earthquake is overdue! See Flyer \n\n\n\nMenlo Park has about 200 “soft story” residential buildings known for potential building failure following an earthquake. Should these building “fail” following the next earthquake\, 5\,000 residents could potentially be displaced. Soft story buildings can be economically retrofitted while people remain living in them. Getting a “soft story” retrofit policy (with programs and actions) added to the City of Menlo Park’s updated Safety Element is a MPC Ready goal. Those living in “soft story” buildings are especially invited to attend and encouraged to bring neighbors with them.

SUMMARY:Menlo Fire CERT Levels 1\,2\,3 Involvement Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Menlo Park Fire Protection District is holding a meeting for all current Menlo Park Fire District CERT members\, or those who are interested in learning more about the different levels of involvement and membership. The meeting will be held on Thursday\, October 26th at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in attending\, please contact Heather Keller\, Community Volunteer Coordinator at hkeller@menlofire.org to receive the calendar invitation. This event is posted to encourage a robust community engagement and participation in the Menlo Fire’s CERT planning efforts. The posting does not imply an endorsement of the proposed new levels\, their requirements or the proposed reporting (into the Fire District) of the trained CERTs. In some other jurisdictions\, trained CERTs do not report into a Fire District but instead report into a jurisdiction. It’s important to keep an open mind regarding what’s best for our community\, and what would most foster community disaster preparedness. The Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters have also adopted the 4C values of Cooperation\, Coordination\, Collaboration and Communication. These were adopted to reduce overlapping and/or duplication of effort\, and to fill needed gaps.
